Escape the Content Hamster Wheel - Part 8, Your fans don't want perfect

October 05, 2026•3 min read

🎄Your fans don't want perfect

They want YOU (and maybe some jeans from the 1980’s)

I've got a confession...

I secretly love ugly Christmas sweaters🎄

The louder, sillier, and more over-the-top they are, the better. Every December people proudly wear sweaters that would make a fashion designer cry😂

Why?

Because they're fun. Nobody's judging the stitching or whether every reindeer is perfectly centered. They're smiling because the sweater has personality.

Your fan connections work the same way.

I can't tell you how many people I've met who delay sharing something because the lighting wasn't quite right, they stumbled over a word, or the background wasn't perfect. Heck, I used to be one of those people myself!

So they don't post the video.

They don't send the email.

They skip the livestream.

They hold back that exclusive update for their Patreon-style community.

They keep rewriting the newsletter until the moment has passed.

Meanwhile, someone else with less talent but more courage is building stronger relationships simply because they showed up. Here's something even funnier...

People will gladly pay extra for jeans that already have holes in them👖 Imperfection has value because it feels real. The same is true when you share your work.

That little laugh after you miss a lyric during a livestream. Your dog wandering into the video. A blooper from the recording studio. A typo you catch five minutes after sending your newsletter. A candid backstage photo instead of a polished publicity shot.

Those little moments remind people there's an actual human behind the music, the books, and everything you share.

Perfection is polished.

Authenticity is memorable.

That doesn't mean you should stop trying to do your best. It simply means your best doesn't have to be flawless before you put it out into the world.

This doesn't just apply to social media.

It applies to the email you almost didn't send. The livestream you were nervous about. The behind the scenes photo you thought wasn't good enough. The exclusive update you almost kept to yourself. The blog post you kept editing.

Your audience isn't waiting for perfection.

They're waiting for you.

If perfectionism has been slowing you down, I'd love to help. Sometimes all you need is someone to say, "It's ready. Hit Publish." During a Success Session, I'll help you identify what actually matters, what your audience notices, and what you can stop worrying about so you can confidently put your best work out into the world.

After our Success Session, you can put on your ugly Christmas sweater with confidence...and hit Publish anyway😄 Email me to book today.

🐹 In the next installment of Escape the Content Hamster Wheel, I'm going to show you why reinventing the (hamster) wheel is one of the biggest time-wasters in marketing, and what you should be doing instead.

PS: On a side note, some people have a big, underlying problem: your platform stinks! I was never fully happy with social posting tools like Post Planner, Later or Hootesuite, so I decided to build my own - the platform of my dreams! Now I’m offering it to my comrades who feel the pain of paying WAY too much for essential tools that don’t stink. Email me if you want details.
