Escape the Content Hamster Wheel - Part 9, Stop Messing With The Recipe
🧁Stop messing with the recipe
I only did it once, but I’m still not forgiven…
I have a funny story for you. My six kids are crazy about my mom's Cincinnati Chili recipe. When I tell them I'm making it, I get smiles so bright I need sunglasses😎 Well, one time I decided to skip the noodles because I thought I could make it "healthier" without all those carbohydrates.
Big mistake😂
They all ate it willingly anyway, but there were no smiles that time. Years later, every time I say, "I'm making your Grandma's chili," they shout for joy and then immediately say, "PLEASE don't skip the noodles this time!"
Years later! They still haven't forgotten the missing noodles🤣
Why? Because I messed with a recipe that already worked. And that got me thinking about marketing.
What would happen if your favorite bakery decided to invent a completely new recipe for every single thing they made? Every morning they'd have to come up with something completely different, test it, bake it, taste it, and hope people liked it.
😩Sounds exhausting, right? That's not how a good bakery functions.
A good bakery has recipes that work. Maybe they change the flavor or decoration on top, but the basic recipe stays the same because people already LOVE it. And you can do the same thing with your marketing.
Did an email get a good response? Save the structure.
Did a particular type of post get people talking? Do another one.
Did a promotion bring in sales? Keep the recipe.
Did a video format get people watching? Make another.
You can change the flavor. Change the story. Change the photo. Change the song, book, product, or offer. But you don't have to throw away the basic recipe that already works.
That's not being lazy. That's being smart🧠
And here's where I see people get themselves into trouble. You're often so close to your own work that it's hard to recognize which parts of your marketing are actually working. You may be spending hours trying to invent something new when you've already got a perfectly good recipe sitting right in front of you.
That's exactly the kind of thing I love helping people like you figure out.
During a one-on-one Success Session video call, we can look at what's working, what isn't, and where you're making extra work for yourself for no good reason. 🐹 In the next installment of Escape the Content Hamster Wheel, we're going to talk about something even more powerful: getting your fans to help do some of your marketing for you😉
PS: On a side note, some people have a big, underlying problem: your platforms make you work too hard! Repeating a great recipe makes things easier for you, but all that goes out the window if it takes too long to bake it. I was never fully happy with platforms like Drip, WordPress, Shopify, and Post Planner, so I decided to build my own - the platform of my dreams! Now I’m offering it to my comrades who feel the pain of paying WAY too much for essential tools that don’t stink. Email me if you want details.
